The Complex Systems Simulation and Optimization Group in the NREL Computational Science Center has an immediate opening for a graduate student researcher with a background in computational science, with special emphasis on high performance applied mathematical approaches to solving problems related to energy systems. The researcher will work on improving the performance of current software infrastructure utilized by NREL domain scientists and applied mathematicians alike. The researcher will survey state-of-the-art preconditioners for linear and nonlinear problems, and optimization solvers for ensuring realistic physical quantities.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and motivated researcher with a strong technical background and an interest in the mission of NREL. The successful candidate will collaborate with NREL staff on efforts to develop and apply numerical linear algebraic techniques to real-world problems in renewable energy research, with specific emphasis on modernization of the nation’s electrical infrastructure and operation to support the large amounts of renewable energy generation.
• Improve the general purpose open-source block solver software package built upon the FEniCS and PETSc libraries.
• Collaborate with NREL researchers to use this software to improve complex simulations on NREL’s HPC systems.
• Assist in the development of a parallel nonlinear programming solver that works on top of PETSc.
• Contribute to the writing of journal papers on topics related to mathematical software and novel iterative solver/preconditioner approaches for solving PDEs related to energy systems.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: You will need to upload unofficial transcripts and a letter of recommendation as part of the application process.
Proficient with PETSc, FEniCS/Firedrake, Dolfin-adjoint, HYPRE, and related scientific libraries.
Expertise using MPI, C/C++, and Python.
Familiarity with state-of-the-art mesh generation and domain decomposition techniques.
Strong background in high performance computing, linear algebra, finite element methods, and mathematical optimization.
