Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

The Fort Jackson Land Management Supervisor coordinates Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance (LRAM) and Range and Training Land Assessments (RTLA) and administrative operations. This includes: ensuring field crews are conducting land management work in adherence to environmental approvals, staff time reporting and project completion reporting is accurate, and self-performing RTLA surveys to determine project requirements for LRAM projects.

Required Job Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field (e.g. natural resources management, geography, cartography, environmental science, etc.)

  • At least three years of work experience in a relevant field is required.

  • Experience with conducting land management surveys.

  • Knowledge of Geographical Information System and Global Positioning System technologies.

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, report writing, and communicating via email.

  • Ability to coordinate LRAM or natural resources land management projects with field staff and government representatives.

  • Ability to provide administrative oversight to land management field crews.

  • Experience operating four-wheel drive trucks over rough terrain.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one by the employment start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience applying Geographical Information System and Global Positioning System technologies.

  • Experience working on public lands with multiple land management and regulatory agencies.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to operate light equipment such as skid-steers, hydro-seeders and hand-tools such as, chainsaws, weed-eaters, and brush cutters.

  • Three years’ experience providing oversight to land management crews.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category LRAM and RTLA Project Coordination

Duty/Responsibility

(1) Verify Fort Jackson’s LRAM and RTLA project requirements. (2) Supervise personnel required to execute Fort Jackson’s LRAM and RTLA activities (3) Schedule/coordinate LRAM and RTLA project execution. (4) Document/update execution progress, and assist the Government in identifying future LRAM projects and RTLA practices. (5) Maintain a log of LRAM field crew time and attendance. (6) Frequently prepare written reports related to LRAM and RTLA activities.

Duty/Responsibility

(1) Conduct land condition assessments per thresholds established in Training Circular (TC) 25-1.
(2) Document observations made in the field using precisely written language and photos. (3) Keep track of LRAM project completion timelines and document project completion through reports and photos. (4) Ensure field staff are completing land management tasks in accordance with determined best management practices.
(5) Keep track of land management supply requirements and ensure proper PPE is available and being used.
(6) Assist crew with installing silt fence, planting seed, spreading straw, weed-eating and other tasks requiring manual labor. (7) Keep federal staff regularly informed on RTLA and LRAM efforts verbally, through email, and with reports and checklists.
