Description of Work Unit

Trades Maintenance Services supports Facilities Management, Administration Services, and Colorado State University Strategic Plans to create and maintain an aesthetically pleasing and functional environment that meets or exceeds the University’s needs for instruction, research and outreach. Within the limits of its allocated resources, Trades Maintenance Services (quality trades and maintenance services) supports structural, mechanical, electrical and small construction project management. The Carpenter Shop ensures that the cosmetic and structural components of the academic and administrative buildings are repaired and maintained to provide a safe and functional environment. This is accomplished by modifying, repairing, fabricating, installing, and constructing to comply with applicable codes and CSU building construction standards (BCSM).

Position Summary

The Apprentice Carpenter assists journeymen to ensure that the structural components of the academic and administrative buildings are repaired and maintained to provide a safe and functional environment, by modifying, repairing, fabricating, installing and constructing to comply with building standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of general building/facility maintenance experience.

The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:

  • Basic knowledge and ability to perform a variety (floor to roof) of carpentry tasks and repairs.

  • Safety-minded and the ability to maintain a clean workspace.

  • Demonstrated experience taking direction and recommendations from peers and staff and the desire to work under the guidance of a journeyman carpenter.

  • Ability to be resourceful when approaching new tasks and jobs to complete.

  • Demonstrated time management skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Ability to display integrity, honesty, and a strong work ethic under limited supervision.

  • Attention to detail and precision with the work product.

Essential Job Duties

Job Duty Category Repairs


Assists in the repairs to interior areas of campus buildings including, but not limited to:

  • Vinyl and ceramic tile

  • Vinyl cover base

  • Laminate countertops and backsplashes

  • Damaged ceiling tiles

  • Assist in the installation new and/or replacing old worn, broken, or malfunctioning custodial dispensing systems such as paper towel, toilet paper, hand soap, and cleaning chemical dispensing units as well as outside cigarette disposal units.

  • Tables and desks

  • Metal and wood bleachers
