Overview of the Role
Responsible for conducting fundamental research on equity securities in the small/mid-cap financial / financial technology sectors. Analyst conducts deep qualitative and quantitative research of industries and individual companies to anticipate future financial performance. Analyst will develop detailed financial models to project current and future value. Analyst is expected to make buy and sell recommendations and provide relevant supporting information to portfolio managers. Analyst is expected to collaborate closely with colleagues as a member of the Janus Henderson small/mid-cap team and the financial and technology sector teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct deep fundamental analysis within the financial and technology sectors.
Develop expert view and outlook of relevant companies and industries using primary and third-party research including extensive independent contacts such as competitors, customers, partners and other relevant industry participants.
Interview company senior management teams.
Accumulate and analyze proprietary and third-party data to interpret and anticipate industry trends.
Evaluate current and future competitive position and industry structure.
Analyze financial statements and reports, financial health, and earnings quality.
Forecast growth and project and model future revenue, profits, and cash flows.
Construct comprehensive valuation analysis including discounted cash flows and upside and downside scenarios
Synthesize research to form a differentiated view on companies, stocks, and industries.
Communicate articulately, concisely and persuasively.
Draft reports/notes on relevant investment themes, research, and breaking news events.
Partner closely with portfolio managers, colleagues, and team members as part of a collaborative, team-oriented culture and iterative investment process.Other FunctionsAssumes additional duties as assignedSupervisory ResponsibilitiesNone. Technical Skills and Qualifications
Strong interest in stocks, economics, business, technology, and financial markets.
Background in equity research with relevant experience in technology, capital markets, financial services, private equity, or consulting considered.
Understanding of corporate finance and accounting.
Financial modeling experience including revenues, profits, assets, liabilities, and cash flows.
Familiarity with valuation tools and techniques including discounted cash flow analysis.
Experience with MS Office, financial desktops (Bloomberg, Factset, etc.), and statistical analysis. Other technical skills considered.
Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
Ability to function effectively in team-oriented environment but also work and make decisions independently.
Strong creativity, initiative, intellectual curiosity and drive.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to multi-task, organize, and assimilate large amounts of information quickly.
3+ years relevant experience buy or sell-side equity research.
Four-year degree in finance, economics, computer science, engineering or related fields preferred.
Post graduate degree such as MBA/MS a plus
CFA or progress toward a CFA a plus
