The incumbent of this position serves as Actuary Team Lead in the Business Operations & Administration, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, furnishing actuarial analysis, reports, and related data pertinent to the administration and revision of veterans' health services and entitlement programs. This includes (but is not limited to) community care and other medical benefit programs.

Responsibilities
  • Denver CO or Washington DC is the preferred location but position may be virtual for a highly qualified candidate.
  • Provide Expert Consultation on social or health insurance studies.
  • Research techniques and the validity of actuarial assumptions and methods.
  • Plan,coordinate and analyze recent financial experience.
  • Prepare estimates of future experience based on general social, economic and demographic factors.
  • Independently plan and execute a variety of projects and make authoritative and final decisions requiring considerable technical and administrative judgment.
  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate new estimation methodologies and models.
  • Provide guidance to team members on methodologies and techniques.
  • Apply advanced theories, practices methods and principles of actuarial science.
  • Development of actuarial liability for various programs as required by for financial reporting.
  • Perform advanced programming in Excel, Access or other software to perform data mining and predictive modeling activities.
  • Assist team in organizing to accomplish the work. *Work Schedule: Mon- Fri 8:00am-4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Lead Actuary/101570 Physical Requirements:*The work is primarily sedentary with long periods of sitting at a desk, working with computers daily. Some work may require walking in offices and similar areas for meetings. Work may also require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite. The work does not require any special physical effort.

Basic Requirements One year of actuarial experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

**AND

Degree:A bachelor's degree that included courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science totaling at least 24 semester hours. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.**

OR

Combination of education and experience that includes both of the following requirements:

a. Completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours of courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science at a four year college or university. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.

b. Technical work experience in actuarial support work or in mathematics.

OR

Applicants may qualify for a position at grade levels GS-07 through GS-13 using the "Special Alternate Means" provisions described below. Applicants for all grade levels must complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science at a four year college or university. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites. Successful completion of appropriate examinations offered by the Society of Actuaries(SOA), the Casualty Actuarial Society(CAS), or the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries(JBEA), as evidenced by an official SOA or CAS transcript, and specialized experience described below is fully qualifying at the grade levels shown below: * One year of professional actuarial experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level and Associateship in the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society or being an Enrolled Actuary. AND

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-13 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

1) Provide Expert Consultation on social or health insurance studies. 2) Research techniques and the validity of actuarial assumptions and methods. 3) Development of actuarial liability for various programs as required by for financial reporting. 4) Apply advanced theories, practices methods and principles of actuarial science. 5) Provide guidance to team members on methodologies and techniques.

**Note: Evidence of specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held on your resume. You must provide work experience information such as hours per week, salary, and starting/ending dates of employment (month and year format) to establish you have one (1) full year of Specialized Experience at or comparable to the required grade level.

And

Education (Transcripts Required):**A bachelor's degree that included courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science totaling at least 24 semester hours. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.
