Laboratory Tech - OMC (PRN) (Job ID: 4172)Job SummaryUnder general supervision, responsible for independently collecting,accessioning, processing, performing, and reporting moderately complexand waived testing according to physician orders and in accordance withlaboratory policies and procedures, FDA, TJS, CLIA, OSHA regulationsto facilitate optimum quality patient care. The employee is responsible forperforming and recording environmental and instrument QC, maintaininglaboratory equipment, and ensuring high quality interactions with patients.Responsibilities*Participates working at any clinical laboratory site based on staffing needsfor patient care at the discretion of the section supervisor.*Conducts laboratory testing competently, such as dipstick and microscopicurinalysis, wet preps, pregnancy test, Grp A beta streptococcalscreening, point-of-care glucose, rapid hemoglobin and/or other tests toprovide diagnostic information to ordering provider.*Performs quality control procedures as required for all testing performed.*Operates moderately complex and waived testing instrumentation.*Maintains laboratory instrumentation as required by procedure ormanufacturers' recommended guidelines.*Identifies problems and either performs the necessary adjustments or conductsmaintenance.*Maintains records of instrumentation maintenance.*Performs venipuncture for specimen collection on all age groups, using atleast 2 patient identifiers and ensuring specimens are labeled in front of thepatient correctly with date and initials as required.*Performs accessioning into the laboratory information system utilizingappropriate barcoded labels.*Processes and preserves specimens following instructions in procedures orlaboratory information system.*Tracks specimens in laboratory information system to be sent to corelaboratory for testing.*Reports test results in laboratory information system and maintains requireddocumentation of results.*Meets turnaround time expectations and demonstrates clerical accuracy ofreporting.*Reviews and resolves incomplete and/or pending logs before end of shift.*Orders laboratory supplies from Central Supply in order to perform allprocedures and testing available.*Follows safety, life safety, and infection control procedures for self,patients, and others at all times.*Participates in training and teaching of new staff, students, orresidents in the laboratory as needed.*Participates in required competency, continuing education, andproficiency testing within the required timelines.*Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with fellow employees,physicians, patients and visitors.*Treats each individual with courtesy, dignity, empathy, and respect.*Consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbalcommunications.*Other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities*Ability to work professionally with patients.*Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.*Knowledge of moderately complex and waived laboratory tests processes andtesting procedures.*Knowledge of quality control procedures to maintain/ensure testingintegrity.*Knowledge of safety and infection control practices to ensure a safeenvironment of care.*Skills necessary to successfully perform phlebotomy in a variety of agegroups.*Ability to handle patient specimens and laboratory equipment.*Ability to work independently.*Ability to perpetuate teamwork.*Familiar with regulatory compliance in quality control and competencyrequirements.*Good communication and customer relation skills to ensure patient safety andquality processes in the laboratory.EducationHigh School Diploma or GED (Required) Graduation from high school orpossession of a GED certificate, required.ExperienceTwo years of experience as a phlebotomist or laboratory technician in ahospital/medical laboratory, or medical assistant with hospital/medicallaboratory testing experience, preferredCredentialsPhlebotomy TechnicianPhlebotomy certificate preferred.LocationDenver HealthSh
