Position: Substance Abuse Counselor

Job Purpose:

Provides substance abuse counseling services including but not limited to assessment, treatment planning, long-term counseling, psycho-education, case management, advocacy, and follow-up. This person will report to the Clinical Director.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Works with physicians and other personnel in client evaluation and treatment to further sobriety;

  • Performs intake, evaluation, orientation, admissions, treatment planning, counseling, documentation, discharge planning and referral of substance abusing clients

  • Provides services planned to restore client to optimum social and health adjustment

  • Assists client and family, through individual, group, family, and/or couples? therapy

  • Maintains case records and urine surveillance system

  • Completes/Assists in the completion of Utilization Reviews insurance companies to obtain authorizations for clients (conduct ASAM evaluation)

  • Assesses all assigned clients to determine presence and extent of substance abuse issues; completes evaluation report and presents cases during weekly supervision and case presentation

  • Develops and documents individualized treatment plans that address the needs of substance abuse client population

  • Recommends treatment plans for clients to the Facility Director, Clinical Director, and any other outside corroborating providers

  • Refers clients to appropriate treatment modality based on assessment

  • Collects statistics as required for reports

  • Prepares required reports and paperwork in a timely manner

  • Develops and facilitates process groups and educational programs

  • Develops and facilitates process groups and educational programs for Family Programs

  • Identifies opportunities for program improvement and Quality Improvement monitors

  • Participates in continuing education to continually improve skills and abilities and stay abreast of current technologies/practices

  • Works cooperatively with the on-staff Medical Director, Psychiatrist, Certified Nurse Practitioner and medical technician

  • Understands and is prepared to provide services to clients experiencing co-occurring disorders

  • Is familiar with psychotropic medications commonly used in the treatment of addictions/co-occurring disorders

  • Provides education and counseling of process and behavioral disorders

  • Ensures compliance with legal issues including but not limited to client confidentiality and risk management; ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

  • Exhibits a high degree of courtesy, tact, and poise when interacting with clients, families, and other personnel

  • Adjusts to fluctuating peaks in client flow, acuity, and other operational demands while maintaining quality

  • Participates in weekly individual supervision

  • Participates in scheduled case review meetings and peer supervision

  • Develops and implements appropriate, effective and evidence-based curriculum

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Facility Director and Clinical Director

The SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR WILL:

Complete and present/submit all intakes, evaluations, treatment plans, counseling notes and documentation, discharge plans, referral evaluations, and reports for review and signature by the Clinical Director.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Master?s Degree in a related field, and 2-5 years of clinical experience in a substance abuse agency

  • CAC II, CAC III, or LAC Required

  • LPC Required

  • Experience working with ASAMS and Kipu

  • Must be willing to learn and ask questions, accept feedback and be accountable

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow

  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm; Strong interpersonal skills

  • Able to work collaboratively with multiple health and criminal justice professionals using tact, diplomacy, and discipline; Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds.
