Boulder Community Hospital RN Informatics Specialist in Boulder, Colorado

Full Time, Days.

Candidates will be placed into the appropriate level based on skills, experience, and qualifications. Starting rate for each level is: Level I- $32.64 per hour, Level II- $35.92 per hour, Level III- $39.74 per hour. Additional consideration based on years of experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Nursing Informatics Specialist utilizes nursing science, clinical, and institutional knowledge in conjunction with an understanding of information technology and analytical sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate electronic data systems and their workflows in the clinical space at BCH. They serve as a professional clinical liaison to all areas impacted by clinical documentation and data management, biomedical engineering and information technology to ensure multi- and inter-disciplinary project coordination. Through familiarity with the function and process of the departments, this position will help support the analysis, design, implementation and education of the physician/clinical staff for the use of the applications at Boulder Community Hospital while working to maintain and/or improve patient safety and clinical workflow. Additionally, this position is responsible for oversight of process re-design in order to support the application rollout and ongoing support of clinical staff with electronic documentation and additional information systems. S/he also participates in communications and project planning regarding system implementation and integration with other BCH initiatives.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Level 1

Education or Formal Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required

  • Principal Trainer certification in relevant Epic application within 3 months of hire

Special Qualifications

  • Current Colorado Registered Nurse License

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

  • Knowledge of basic integrated clinical systems.

  • Knowledge of general principles of information systems and computer usage

  • Basic knowledge of PC software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software)

  • Highly developed interpersonal and critical thinking skills.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving aptitude.

  • Prioritize needs rapidly and ability to set and meet deadlines.

  • Convey messages and thoughts clearly to a diverse audience through both written and verbal mediums.

  • Coordinates and supervises the Operational Credentialed Trainer’s work related to classroom training and optimization activities.

Experience

  • 1-3 years relevant healthcare experience required.

  • 1-3 years healthcare IT experience preferred.

  • Epic background preferred

  • Understanding of hospital and ambulatory operations, interdepartmental procedures and interdisciplinary interactions and workflows in the healthcare setting

  • Experience in computer or data management related field preferred

Level 2

Education or Formal Training

  • All requirements of Level 1 Nurse Informatics Specialist

  • Epic Clinical Informatics Certification required within 4 months of hire

  • Epic Clinical Builder Certification required within one year of hire

  • MSN, MHA, MBA preferred

Special Qualifications

  • All requirements of Level 1 Nurse Informatics Specialist

  • Clinical Informatics ANCC certification required within one year of hire

  • Project Management Professional certification preferred

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

  • All requirements of Level 1 Nurse Informatics Specialist

  • Knowledge of the nursing process and nursing practice, clinical workflows, relevant regulatory mandates, and principles of quality/safety improvement.

  • Basic knowledge of process improvement skills and philosophies.

  • Basic knowledge of project management skills and philosophies.

  • Working knowledge of project management tools and software (Visio) required.

  • Promote change among large groups.

  • Change management education or certification preferred.

  • Ability to multi-task and manage several projects simultaneously

  • Mentorship of Level 1 Nurse Informatics Specialist

  • 1-3 years healthcare IT experience required

  • 3-5 years healthcare IT experience required.

Level 3

Education or Formal Training

  • MSN, MHA, MBA required

Special Qualifications

  • All requirements of Level 2 Nurse Informatics Specialist.

  • Clinical Informatics ANCC certification required within six months of hire.

  • Project Management Professional certification preferred

  • Change management certification or education preferred

  • Position will work closely with the clinical staff, hospital leadership, Project Management Office and IT Applications Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Scope of Duties:

  • Work with multiple applications impacting the clinical space at BCH, Applications may span multiple systems, vendors and operating platforms

  • Participate in or lead complex projects and teams

  • Lead the Clinical Informatics staff’s work with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff to ensure design, implementation, and ongoing support of the EHR meets their needs. Additionally, works with customers to identify and define policy additions or changes effected by EHR system implementations.

  • Direct the focus of clinical process decisions toward positive impacts on the quality of patient care, patient safety and clinical outcomes

  • Direct the focus of clinical processes towards standardization

  • Provide direct support to the clinical staff on a regular basis

  • Support BCH’s strategic initiatives and regulatory requirements.

  • Clinical Informaticist staff work with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff to ensure design, implementation, and ongoing support of the EHR meets their needs. Additionally, works with customers to identify and define policy additions or changes effected by EHR system implementations.

  • Brings clinical review to all projects to ensure usability of functionality is achieved

  • Assures systems development and maintenance provides efficient workflow and processing for end users

  • Collaborates with application analysts, operations, and subject matter experts to identify opportunities for system or workflow optimization to better support end users.

  • Collaborates with application analysts and EHR Educators to create Snapshot education for optimization activities.

  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, in a fast-paced and frequently changing environment.

  • Demonstrates adaptability/flexibility skills: Demonstrating flexibility with respect to changing end-user business needs
