Summary:
The Controller is responsible for direct supervision of all accounting functions. Primary responsibilities include the monthly close process, monthly reporting, fixed asset management, all tax filings (sales, income, property, etc.), and the annual audit. The Controller will also create and implement policies and procedures to identify, resolve and document accounting issues and create procedures to make the close and reporting processes more efficient and accurate. This position reports directly out of our dog-friendly home office in Boulder, CO.
Key Responsibilities:
Hands-on preparation of accurate financial reports (period, quarter, and annual)
Reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts
Responsible for the accurate reporting of merchandise inventory including:
Inventory roll-forwards
Reserve forecasts (markdown, shrink and returns reserve)
Inventory in-transit
Month-end calculations for financial reporting
Prepare for and oversee the quarterly physical inventory counts at retail store locations.
Manage the fixed asset system to ensure all assets of the company are recorded and accurately tracked for financial reporting and tax filing purposes (State and Federal)
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
Assist with annual preparation of budgets
Responsible for corporate risk insurance policies, renewals, and claims
Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
Oversee AP, AR, 3rd party reconciliations and treasury functions
Manage a small stable accounting team
Foster team atmosphere within and between departments
Qualifications:
CPA with 8-10 years of related experience required; prior experience managing and training accounting staff a must
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; MBA a plus
Familiarity with ERP systems a must (Microsoft Dynamics GP preferred), POS and retail experience a plus
Knowledge of retail operations and inventory preferred; experience in high volume, transaction driven, multi-location operations is an asset
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as this position interacts with external business partners and executives throughout the company
Excellent problem-solving skills. Ability to dig in, research, identify and solve issues
Exceptional Excel and data importing skills
Excellent analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail
Flexible schedule with ability to accommodate demands of financial reporting cycles
