The Facilities Management department at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus has an opening for a full-time State Classified HVACR Technician (Pipe/Mechanical Trades II) position.
Job Summary:
Operate, monitor, service and/or repair refrigeration equipment, HVAC systems, and associated hardware for all CU Anschutz campus buildings. Respond to emergency calls pertaining to HVAC and refrigeration problems, and emergencies throughout the campus. Ensure the safest and most efficient operation and training of personnel for the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems at CU Anschutz.
Examples of Work Performed:
Research Refrigeration Preventive Maintenance and Repairs (45%)
- Complete work requests for preventive maintenance and repairs to specialized refrigeration systems that directly facilitate research. Inspect, replace, adjust, program, and calibrate electronic and refrigeration controls and components. Install, repair, and replace systems and components. Systems include 4-37 degree environmental rooms, process chillers, and walk-in freezers. The refrigeration units are critical to the mission of the University; research funding and projects are at stake.
HVAC Preventive Maintenance and Repairs (35%)
- Complete work requests for preventive maintenance and repairs to building and occupant owned HVAC systems and components. Install, repair, and replace systems and components for building and occupant owned HVAC ventilation, cooling, heating and associated controls. The position records repairs and maintenance performed in a work order data system. The position must have the ability to perform data entry in a computer. Types of systems could include package systems, split systems, chillers, CRAC units, AHUs, FCUs, humidifiers, etc.
Refrigerant Management (10%)
Recover and clean chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC’s), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC’s). Store and reuse all types of CFC’s, HCFC’s, and HFC’s. Be able to use servicing and reclaiming equipment for refrigerants. Work with and monitor the CFC program. The position must have the ability to enter, update, and modify information in the database as well as maintain and keep hard-copy records of all refrigerant handling activities. Accurate record keeping is important because the University can be fined by the EPA.
The position must be able to properly use recovery equipment and weigh and accurately record tank tare weights and gross weights. The position must also have the ability to perform mathematical functions and correctly and accurately calculate amounts used, net-weight from gross-weight, tare weight, etc.
Training and operates as a Subject Matter Expert (5%)
- Provide training and assistance to other employees. Participate as a member of interview teams in new employee hiring process. The position will work with the HR Consultant to write interview questions and assess candidates in the hiring process.
Emergencies, Special Events, and Other Duties (5%)
- Participate and assist in emergencies based on the magnitude and nature. Support various special events both in preparation and during the event. Examples of emergencies and special events could include commencement, snow removal, power outage, flood, etc. May be assigned other duties as required.
Salary & Benefits:
The starting base salary range is $4,277 - $4,577 per month (non-negotiable)*
The salary offered is usually the minimum listed, however, a salary above the minimum may be offered for some hard to fill positions.
The individual in this position may also be eligible for additional pay on top of the base salary, in recognition of certain critical skills and/or certifications
This position is eligible for overtime compensation

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
At least three (3) years of experience in the HVACR industries
Substitution: Trade school experience in HVACR can substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
Necessary Special Qualification: EPA Universal Certification is required in order to work with refrigerants on all types of equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
At least four (4) years of experience in the HVACR industries
Commercial HVACR experience
Experience with medium and/or low temperature refrigeration applications
Experience working on chillers
Experience with large motor and bearing repairs – 10HP and above
